Site Development

Full site development services including erosion control, tree removal, clear, grub & strip, site cuts & fills, rough grade, utility installations, excavation for foundations, grading, paving & associated prep, curbing, walkways and miscellaneous other site improvements.

Earthwork & Excavation

M.J. Scully delivers expert earthwork and excavation services, including interior excavation, land clearing and grubbing, foundation and basement excavation, site cut and fill, and full site development. We also specialize in erosion control, roadway prep, contaminated soil disposal, ledge and boulder removal, dewatering, underpinning, and support of excavation—always prioritizing safety and project goals.

Underground Utilities

We specialize in utility work involving installation of water, sewer, storm drain, electric and tel/comm. From city streets in Boston, Cambridge and other municipalities to tight campus locations on local college, universities and hospitals M.J. Scully has the experience, expertise and temperance to execute the installation safely.

Site Improvements & Finish Surfaces

M.J. Scully installs a wide variety of site improvements and finish surfaces some of which include:

Granite & precast curbing and bituminous concrete berm.
ADA compliant concrete walks, ADA accessible ramps including ADA detectable warning panels.
Brick, precast & permeable pavers.
Protective bollards
Mill & overlay and full depth bituminous concrete and associated pavement markings
Segmental block walls with PE stamped shop drawings as necessary.

Value Add Services

Smaller, logistically challenging projects require a higher level of coordination

amongst the different trades. M.J. Scully

can include the following scope traditionally performed by others:

Design and self-perform underpinning.
Concrete form and flatwork for small additions, elevator pits within existing buildings and ADA accessible ramps.
Piles including design of helical piles, drilled mini-piles (DMP's) and Steclor displacement piles.

OUR STORY

Though founded in 1991 by Michael J. Scully, M.J. Scully was originally a dream envisioned back in the early to mid 1980's. Encouraged by his oldest son Shaun and his youthful enthusiasm, the goal was to create a family-owned company in which his sons would actively participate.

In 1985, the blueprint was in place with Shaun successfully completing his freshman year at Merrimack College, majoring in civil engineering. Then tragedy struck. Shaun was killed in a construction accident and it appeared that Mike's dream of a family business was gone.

In 1991, Mike took out a loan and formed M.J. Scully & Company to test the entrepreneurial spirits that lingered within him and to see if he could finish the rest of his construction career self-employed. As with life Mike's venture took many twists and turns and there were several times when it appeared that the original investment in his dream was dwindling and it may come to an end. In late 1997 / early 1998 Mike's two younger sons Kevin & Michael wanted to help their Dad achieve the dream envisioned by Shaun and the rest is history.

M.J. Scully & Company initially specialized in small to medium sized and logistically complex projects involving site/excavation, utilities and site development. Working primarily as a subcontractor to large General Contractors, M.J. Scully utilized it’s expertise and experience to perform work in the segment of the market that was difficult for General Contractors (i.e. small enough that larger site contractors were not interested, yet big and sophisticated enough that small site contractors did not have the knowledge or the capabilities to perform the work).

As we have continued to grow so have our capabilities, but we have maintained our core values. WE SELL VALUE, NOT COST. Our typical scope of work generally consists of: site preparation, excavation and backfill of foundations and interior utilities; excavation and installation of underground utilities (i.e. water, sewer, drainage, electric, tel/com etc.); the installation of all types of walkways (concrete, bituminous concrete, brick & precast pavers) and curbing (i.e.. precast concrete, granite, brick soldier course & bituminous concrete); bituminous concrete including porous ; small concrete form & flatwork; landscaping (plantings, grass / sod and irrigation systems); and other miscellaneous site improvements (ie. segmental & CMU block walls, stone walls, decorative and protective bollards, flagpoles, playground surfaces & equipment, etc.).
